About

The Intention

Established in 1979, Art News is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most relevant, revered and long-standing publications. The editorial direction is led by Sara Black, who has 18 years of experience in the publishing realm. She co-founded Index, Island and The Art Paper magazines, and commissions a diverse range of established and emerging voices with an emphasis on celebrating contemporary art and culture.

Art News is published in print four times a year, alongside regularly published stories, interviews and features online.

The Content

Art News’ focus is on people, craft and process, celebrating those working with pioneering ideas across generations—from established and represented artists to emerging talent. Recent and upcoming profiles include Ana Iti, Derek Henderson, Emily Karaka, Fiona Pardington, Imogen Taylor, Jacqueline Fahey, Jade Townsend, Mike Hewson, Nigel Brown, Roy Good, Sefton Rani, Tony Guo and Yona Lee.

Working in parallel with art-adjacent industries, Art News also explores culture more broadly, encompassing interiors, fashion, design, lifestyle and beyond.

The Magazine

Art News is produced with a collectible quality in mind. Premium paper stock gives each issue a sense of permanence and durability, while the timeless nature of its content is intended to encourage longevity and continued relevance. Each issue runs to 160 pages.
