Pātaka Art+Museum and Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa invite applications for the Aniva Arts Residency from Pacific artists or practitioners who identify as LGBTQIA+/MVPFAFF.

The Creative New Zealand Pacific Aniva Artist Residency 2024 offers an Aotearoa-based Pacific artist or practitioner who identifies as LGBTQ1A+/MVPFAFF a paid, three-month residency based within Pātaka Art + Museum to create a new body of work.

The applicant must have a record of their artistic practice and had a least one public work and/or one solo show. Artists will have expertise in any one of the following areas: visual art, heritage art, design, digital art, writing, public programming, performance or production, and curating. As Pātaka has a bespoke performing arts studio, this year, priority will be given to performing artists.

 

Who is eligible to apply?

You must meet the following criteria:

  • Artist of Pacific Islands heritage
  • Identify as LGBTQiA+/MVPFAFF+
  • Permanent resident or citizen of Aotearoa NZ
  • Applicants who are in current default of any Creative New Zealand Funding will not be eligible to apply.

 

What will be provided through the residency?

  • An artist fee of $18,000 ($6000/month) over three months
  • A domestic travel budget to and from the residency of up to $1000
  • Accommodation of up to $3000 (if relocating for the residency)
  • Material/project costs of up $2000
  • A local artist/creative mentor. The mentor can be nominated by the successful applicant, subject to conversations with CNZ, Pātaka, and the nominated mentor

 

What are the commitments of the residency?

  • The successful applicant is required to spend the majority of their time during the residency period at Pātaka from August – November 2023. (Working remotely for some of the residency can be negotiated). The artist will be required to present a new body of work, produced by way of workshops, events, performances, seminar presentations, or exhibitions. We will be looking for applications that are willing to engage and share their work with local Pacific LGBTQiA+/MVPFAFF+ communities and stakeholders.

Applicants must send in:

  1. A one-page project proposal explaining what you want to do including:
    • Key ideas/themes of your project
    • Rationale (why you are doing it)
    • How your project meets Pātaka/Creative NZ Pacific Arts Strategy pou: Tagata, Va, Vaka, Moana
    • Output (what you hope to produce) and,
    • Potential impact (benefits to the artist and communities/stakeholders).
    • Potential Q: What motivates and interests you and how will this opportunity strengthen your practice?
    • Potential Q: Why is this opportunity important to you right now in your current practice?
  2. A copy of updated CV, clearly stating areas of artistic experience and expertise.
  3. One support letter.


Short-listed applicants may be asked to submit further information if required and will be invited to attend a 30-minute interview (in-person/in-zoom) with the selection panel on Fri 19 April.

The residency is expected to take place between the months of June and November 2024 and the actual start date can be negotiated.

Short-listed candidate interviews will take place on 19 April 2024, with the successful applicant notified by Friday 26 April 2024.

Here, we speak to Art Aunty Claudia Jowitt, who will be hosting drop-in (or Zoom-in) sessions at Samoa House Library on Karangahape Road, offering independent advice and advocacy for artists trying to navigate the industry.
The artwork, by Graham Tipene and Amy Hawke, is on view 17 June through 13 July at Viaduct Harbour.
The sculpture was designed and constructed by emerging architects George Culling, Oliver Prisk, Henry Mabin and André Vachias.
Recipients Quishile Charan, Harry Freeth and p.Walters will exhibiting at Tautai later this year.
Expressions of interest are due by 15 June for the programme, based at the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC).
Exhibition proposals for 2026 are now open and close on Monday 30 June.
