Cat Fooks’ iridescent and playful paintings layer texture, paint, and mixed media, in compositions that accumulate slowly and intentionally. Her richly worked surfaces reflect a practice grounded in close observation, patience, and an intimate relationship with time.

Her studio is a morass of painterly accoutrements and unexpected materials—frames, stretcher wedges, pencils, and paintbrushes mingle with macaroni, makeup compacts, plastic dolphins and coat hangers. These elements often find their way into her paintings, imbuing them with spontaneity and a sense of discovery.

Years of making underpin Fooks’ delicate yet complex works. They invite a sustained engagement with their accumulative, multi-layered surfaces, rich in detail and depth.
