Art and Wonder: Gifts from the Friends of Waikato Museum

10 May – 21 July 2024
Pat Hanly, Wonder, 1981, enamel and graphite on board. Collection of Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato, purchased with assistance from the Friends of Waikato Museum. Accession number 1983/83/1.

Art and Wonder is curated in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Friends of Waikato Museum.

This passionate group has provided decades-long friendship through gifts to the permanent collection, fund-raising, and offering a steady voice in advocating for the arts in Kirikiriroa Hamilton.

Artworks in this exhibition are part of the significant collection of objects, art, and taonga purchased by the Friends for the Museum, over their 50-year history.

From Pat Hanly’s utopian painting, Wonder, to a suite of Campbell Smith’s wood engravings, to Peter Robinson’s assemblage Kargo kult koffer 3, the selected artworks tell the story of the Friends’ love of contemporary art, the emerging and the established, the local and the national, the political, the whimsical and the wonderful.

'The in and the out of it' will take place on Saturday 9 March and will include contributions from Melanie Tangaere Baldwin, Christina Barton, Natasha Conland, Judy Darragh, Ngahuia Harrison, Sarah Hopkinson, Peter Robinson and Shiraz Sadikeen.
Ruth Buchanan on her encounter with the 1996 exhibition and the questions it continues to pose for exhibition-making today.
Peter Robinson’s latest installation is delicate and subtle. Andrew Paul Wood talks to the artist about his deliberate response to the monumental architecture of a gallery space.
For almost 50 years the late Pat Hanly captured the light and colour of the Pacific in a vast body of work—paintings, prints, murals and glass works. Art News talks to his wife, photographer Gil Hanly, about the early days.
