Group Show: Joy on Mute @ Te Tuhi

An artist’s cumulative choices turn form into reality. Joy on Mute invites viewers to find ineffable joy in witnessing those choices. The artists make these choices by conversing with materials, contemplating histories, and practising repetitively. Through this process, joy unfolds—not only for the artists who accumulate the form, but for viewers encountering it for the first time. This joy arrives for viewers in much the same way, through tracing materials, pondering histories, and observing repeatedly.

Joy on Mute opens up five realities found by five individuals: Glen Snow, Henry Turner, Michael Prosée, Sang-ah Choi, and Sione Faletau, who have cultivated their own realities through their joy in shaping form. Snow’s time reconstructs. Turner’s time leaps. Prosée’s time compounds. Choi’s time incises. Faletau’s time composes. Across the wide spectrum of time, viewers can inhabit each reality that this secretive joy has created. Each artist presents a substantial body of work spanning several years, allowing viewers to trace the trajectory of these choices.
