The National Portrait Gallery’s summer exhibition celebrates works by contemporary female artists Del Kathryn Barton, Emily Hunt and Aotearoa New Zealand-born Jess Johnson. Exhibiting together for the first time and presenting works that span painting, textiles, drawings, ceramics and video work, the artists create a cacophony of disruptive female energy in Maiden Mother Crone.

Bree Pickering, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, says the exhibition brings together three exceptional artists, each at the height of their artistic powers. “We’re thrilled to present this new exhibition which highlights the defined and diverse practices of Del Kathryn Barton, Emily Hunt and Jess Johnson. These internationally recognised artists are known for their ornate and otherworldly creations, but their work has never-before been shown together. Maiden Mother Crone is an opportunity to delve into their work in dialogue, while offering new audiences an entry point into their wildly expressive worlds. It celebrates women who defy easy categorisation while revealing and dismantling the contradictions that shape both lived and imagined experiences of womanhood.”
