Dutch artist Jan van der Ploeg presents a new group of abstract paintings alongside a large-scale wall painting at Hamish McKay. The exhibition brings together acrylic works on canvas and paper made in 2026, ranging from compact—almost A4-sized works—to canvases measuring 360mm square.

At the centre of the exhibition is Wall Painting No. 584, part of an ongoing numbered series of site-responsive wall paintings that Van der Ploeg began in the 1990s. Working with hard-edged geometric forms, repetition and flat colour, he adapts each wall painting to the architecture of the space in which it is installed.
Born in Amsterdam in 1959, Van der Ploeg studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. He has exhibited extensively internationally and has a long history of showing in Aotearoa New Zealand, including exhibitions with Hamish McKay, Two Rooms, Starkwhite, Sumer and Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
