About The Programme
The newly established Visiting Artist Programme of Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga Hastings Art Gallery (HAG) offers an annual eight-week residency for Aotearoa artists towards the development of a solo exhibition project. The programme is designed to foster new connections within the Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay region and support the development of unique bodies of work.
The inaugural visiting artist for 2024 is Heidi Brickell. Recognising the need for more open opportunities for established Aotearoa artists, HAG is calling for proposals for a residency beginning August 2025 and a subsequent exhibition in February 2026. We are seeking visiting artist projects which:
- Present an opportunity for an artist to make new work
- Couldn’t be developed elsewhere
- Have the ability to engage audiences and communities in research, making or presentation processes
- Build on a foundation of quality research, relationships and artwork
Resourcing and support includes:
- Accommodation and workspace in Heretaunga Hastings
- Artist stipend of $1,260 per week (total of $10,080 for 8 weeks)
- Domestic travel costs to and from Heretaunga Hastings
- A research and materials budget during the residency of $4500
- Curatorial, logistical and technical support
- Workshop access
- Further support towards exhibition outcomes in February 2026
