Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition

PUBLISHED: NOVEMBER 2026

Watch Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition at Century Theatre, Kahukura Hawke’s Bay Museum on 26 and 29 November 2026. The 90-minute film revisits the Rijksmuseum’s landmark 2023 exhibition devoted to Johannes Vermeer, bringing the scale and intimacy of the exhibition to the cinema screen.

Staged in Amsterdam from February to June 2023, the Rijksmuseum exhibition assembled 28 paintings by Vermeer from collections across seven countries, making it the most comprehensive presentation of his work ever mounted. Given that only around 35 paintings by the artist are generally accepted as surviving, the exhibition represented an exceptional concentration of works that are ordinarily dispersed among major international museums and rarely travel.

The film offers a close encounter with this extraordinary grouping, moving beyond a straightforward record of the exhibition to consider the visual and conceptual qualities that have made Vermeer’s work so enduring. His paintings are renowned for their carefully structured interiors, controlled use of light and quiet, often psychologically ambiguous scenes. Figures read letters, play instruments, pour milk or simply pause within domestic spaces, their activities apparently ordinary yet rendered with an intensity that invites prolonged looking.

That sense of stillness is central to Vermeer’s appeal. Rather than depicting dramatic narratives, his paintings frequently concentrate on moments that appear suspended in time. Light falls through windows, maps and paintings occupy walls, tiled floors recede into carefully constructed space, and familiar objects take on a heightened presence. On the cinema screen, these details become particularly visible, allowing the viewer to attend to surfaces, textures and compositional decisions that can be difficult to register in a crowded gallery.

The Rijksmuseum exhibition also emerged from a substantial programme of research undertaken with the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Curators, conservators and scientists examined Vermeer’s materials, working processes and compositional choices, using new technical research to reconsider aspects of his practice. The exhibition was therefore not simply a gathering of masterpieces, but an opportunity to reassess how Vermeer constructed his images and how his remarkably small body of work developed.

Among the paintings brought together were some of his best-known works, including Girl with a Pearl Earring (1664–67), The Milkmaid (1658–59), The Geographer (1669), Woman Holding a Balance (c. 1662–64) and The Little Street (1658–59). Several had not been seen in the Netherlands for more than two centuries, underscoring the rarity of the exhibition and the logistical achievement involved in assembling it.
