Ammon Ngakuru, Affirmations

Affirmations comprises a series of large text paintings in a range of colours that say the same thing (the ‘affirmations’ of the exhibition’s title), as well as a life-sized sculpture of the artist sleeping in the corner of the gallery.

Ammon Ngakuru (b. 1993) lives in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. He holds a BVA from Auckland University of Technology and a MFA from Elam School of Fine Arts. Recent solo exhibitions include: );  Misere, Coastal Signs, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland (2021); Pumice, Coastal Signs, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland (2021); Cutouts, Enjoy, Pōneke Wellington (2020). Ammon’s work has been included in large-scale group exhibitions including: Aotearoa Contemporary, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (2024); The long waves of our ocean (curated by Hanahiva Rose), National Library of New Zealand, Te Whanganui-a-tara Wellington (2022); Uncomfortable Silence, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Ōtautahi Christchurch (2020); and The Tomorrow People, Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi, Pōneke Wellington (2017).

Ammon is a founding member of the rōpū (board) of Coastal Signs. Affirmations is his third solo exhibition at the gallery.

Opening at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki on Saturday 6 July, the triennial exhibition provides a platform for new art and ideas in Aotearoa New Zealand.
