small holes in the silence

3 February – 14 April 2024
Kyla Cresswell, Wetland Kōreti III-VII, silverpoint on prepared board

Four nationally recognised intaglio printmakers bring together their individual explorations of environments, atmosphere and language. Kyla Cresswell, Catherine Macdonald, Prue MacDougall and Nan Mulder respond to Hone Tuwhare’s poem ‘Rain’, creating a visual connection with the written word, investigating the aural landscape, our fundamental ties to nature, elements of time and the human experience. | Free entry

The exhibition incorporates etching, drypoint, mezzotint, drawing, artist books, photopolymer intaglio and silverpoint. Individually, the artists’ works are distinctive. Collectively, they combine to form a study on drawing, mark-making and process.

Intaglio printmaking encompasses marks, tones and lines—islands of ink in a space, a texture or embossed area that breaks the ‘silence’ of the paper. The artworks are often created in a very manual way, using tools to put marks into metal or plastic plate. The process is slow, sometimes like a silent meditation in itself.

The artists gratefully acknowledge Rob Tuwhare and the Hone Tuwhare Estate for permission to use text from the poem ‘Rain’ by Hone Tuwhare.
