The Hynds Foundation is excited to launch the Crucible Artist Residency as a pilot programme, based at Gillies MetalTech foundry in the historic precinct of Ōamaru.
Background
The Crucible is named after a crucial piece of foundry equipment. Metaphorically, it symbolises an environment where individuals, concepts, and experiences come together to create something new: ‘The crucible is a vessel in which materials yield to intense heat before being transformed into an object. Metal making has often been described as part science, part magic…it is seldom a lone activity, requiring a team to bring the concept to fruition. This process reflects the concept of creative endeavour, where ideas and inspiration undergo a transformative process, often through collaboration and intense effort, to become works of art.”
Criteria and objectives
The opportunity is open for all expressions and mediums of creativity.
The residency enables opportunity through creativity. Our objectives are for an Artist Residency programme that allows for —
- Artists to develop their creative practices, independently or in collaborations between artists, and the skilled craftsmen we have here at Gillies.
- All expressions and mediums of creativity.
- Community connection with artists through the experience.
Artists will be based in the Pattern Shop, a space where pattern makers have meticulously crafted patterns from which moulds can be made, ready to receive molten metal. It is a large and light-filled workspace. Artists may wish to collaborate with our skilled foundry technicians for inter-disciplinary projects.
A key requirement is to produce a body of work, which may form part of an exhibition for the Victorian Week events. The Crucible Gallery next to the Pattern Shop is one of the exhibition spaces available through the residency.
The duration options are 16 weeks or 12 weeks, whichever is preferred by the artist.
Timeline
· 30 April – closing date for applications.
· 1 June – Selection Panel decision advised.
· 11 August – Residency starts – 16 week option.
· 8 September – Residency starts – 12 week option.
· 1 December – Residency ends.
What’s on offer
A stipend of $650 per week (before tax) applies.
Two artists will be selected, one of whom will be local.
