Call for entries: Whakatāne Mural Project

Arts Whakatāne is seeking proposals for two public murals.

Arts Whakatāne is thrilled to invite artists from across New Zealand to submit proposals for TWO captivating mural that explores the interconnected themes of environment, culture, and society. This project aims to create a visual narrative that reflects the collective consciousness and values of our diverse nation and rohe.

 

Selection Criteria:

We encourage artists to expresses their true artistic expression for a mural in Whakatāne, considering environmental and cultural influences of our rohe. From the preservation of natural ecosystems to the celebration of cultural diversity and the exploration of societal connections, we seek proposals that provoke thought and inspire positive change.

  • Thoughtful exploration of environmental, cultural, and social themes.

  • Artistic merit and creativity.

  • Feasibility of execution.

 

Eligibility:

Open to all artists residing in New Zealand.

 

Proposal Requirements:

  • A concise artist statement outlining how your proposal.

  • Concept sketches or digital representations of your mural idea.

  • Explanation of how your artwork will engage viewers and provoke reflection.

  • Size and orientation of the wall is still under discussion, concept designs do not have to be final. Estimate wall size are: Larger 15 meters by 4-5 meters (portrait or landscape) Small/Medium 6-8 meters by 3-4 meters (portrait or landscape)

 

Recognition: The artist with the selected design will receive up to $6,000 for a large mural and $2,000 for a small mural (size to be confirmed) this will paid in two instalments, an upfront payment of 50% and the remaining 50% paid upon completion. In addition, Artist will be provided with paint or selected material and graffiti guard for their mural.

 

Deadline:

  • Submissions must be received by 31 January 2024

  • Late submissions will not be considered.

  • Mural is to be completed before 30th April 2024

The festival of new and existing work will screen in multiple locations across Aotearoa in the later months of 2024, with proposals due 11 March.
The award is open until 31 August and commemorates the artist Evan Webb (1952-2023) who was a key figure in the research and restoration of the work of Len Lye.
Auckland Festival of Photography is Aotearoa New Zealand's leading international photographic art and cultural festival held across Auckland galleries, project and public spaces. They are currently seeking submissions for their 21st edition.

This July, Arts Makers Aotearoa (AMA) will be launching a new service, the Artist Advice Bureau.
